Haneda spotting guide

Where to photograph aircraft at Tokyo Haneda, the airport I grew up next to. The best spots, when to go, and how the wind changes everything.

Pick a wind direction to see which runways are in use and which spots work best.

Terminal observation decks 展望デッキ

MorningAfternoonNightAny wind

Each terminal has a free rooftop deck. Terminal 1 is the JAL side, Terminal 2 the ANA side, and Terminal 3 is international.

Terminal 1 is best from sunrise to noon and is also great at blue hour. Terminals 2 and 3 are better in the afternoon. At night all three are great, and Terminal 1 has the most light.

When it rains, go to Terminal 1: part of the deck has a roof.

Runways T1 and T3 face runway A (16R/34L), T2 faces runway C (16L/34R).

Getting there Monorail or Keikyu to the terminal stations. A free shuttle bus runs between the terminals.

Good to know Opening hours change with the season and tripods may be restricted, so check tokyo-haneda.com before you go.

Shin-Seibijo: Mt. Fuji backdrop 新整備場

MorningSunsetAny wind

Great for aircraft with Mt. Fuji in the background, in the morning and at sunset on clear days when Fuji is visible.

Getting there Monorail to Shin-Seibijo station.

Night aircraft washing 機体洗浄

NightAny wind

Aircraft are washed here every night, from about 2:00 to 5:00.

Getting there Monorail to Shin-Seibijo. The monorail stops around midnight and starts again around 5:00, so plan how you'll get there and back.

ANA Blue Hangar Tour ANA機体工場見学

DaytimeAny wind

A guided tour of ANA's maintenance hangar, with aircraft just metres away. Highly recommended, but places are hard to get.

Getting there Monorail to Shin-Seibijo, then about a 10-minute walk.

Good to know Free, booked online through ANA's website. Tours fill up quickly, so book as soon as dates open.

Ebitori River: runway 22 departures 海老取川

AfternoonSunsetSouth wind 15–19h

Face-to-face with departures from runway 22. Very nice for afternoon departures after 15:00 when the wind is from the south.

Getting there Monorail or Keikyu to Tenkubashi, then a short walk.

Footbath Skydeck 足湯スカイデッキ

AfternoonSunsetSouth wind 15–19hSouth wind

Another great spot for runway 22 departures, on the roof of Haneda Innovation City. With south wind outside 15:00–19:00 you get runway 22 arrivals here instead.

Getting there Monorail or Keikyu to Tenkubashi. The deck is on the roof of Haneda Innovation City.

Remote stands by Anamori Bridge 穴守橋

DaytimeAny wind

There's always something interesting parked here, often a JAL A350-1000, and close-ups are possible.

Getting there Monorail or Keikyu to Tenkubashi, then a short walk.

Jonanjima Seaside Park 城南島海浜公園

MorningAfternoonNorth windSouth wind

Popular, but honestly not worth the effort: it's hard to get to and the views are average. Go only if you're already nearby.

Getting there Bus 森32 from JR Omori, Keikyu Heiwajima or Ryutsu Center to Jonanjima 4-chome, roughly once an hour.

Keihinjima Tsubasa Park 京浜島つばさ公園

AfternoonSunsetNorth windSouth wind

Views across the water to runway 34R departures with north wind, or runway 22 arrivals with south wind. Good light from the afternoon to sunset.

Getting there Bus 森24, 森36 or 森46 to Keihinjima. Buses are infrequent.

Ukishima-cho Park, Kawasaki 浮島町公園

AfternoonSunsetNorth wind

Across the Tama River in Kawasaki: aircraft taxiing to runway 05 and arrivals to 34L. A fence blocks some angles toward runway 05.

Getting there Bus from Kawasaki Station toward Ukishima to Ukishimacho-koen.

Solamnade riverside path ソラムナード羽田緑地

AfternoonNorth wind

A quiet path along the Tama River with arrivals to runway 34L.

Getting there About 15 minutes on foot from Terminal 3 along the river.

JAL Sky Museum JAL SKY MUSEUM

DaytimeAny wind

JAL's museum and hangar tour, the counterpart to ANA's. Free, but you need to reserve in advance.

Getting there Monorail to Shin-Seibijo, about 2 minutes on foot.

Runway use depends on the wind and on air traffic control, so treat this as a guide rather than a timetable. Stay on public paths, respect fences and follow staff instructions.
